Kazakh 'lighter' goes up in smoke

A 32-storey skyscraper which locals in the Kazakh capital Astana brand the «cigarette lighter», because of its shape, burst into flames on Tuesday.

The fire was brought under control after about two hours

A fire on the top floors sent smoke billowing above the capital, before the fire was brought under control.

There were no reports of serious injuries, though three people were treated for smoke inhalation.

The 130m (427ft) building, which houses government and other offices, is the tallest in the country.

Eyewitnesses said one side of the skyscraper appeared to have been badly damaged, and there were reports that the roof had burnt down, showering burning material onto lower floors.
